Milestone

1. On June 20, 1950, this Hall of Famer collected hits number 1,999 and 2,000 against the Cleveland Indians.

2. A star slugger in the N.L. in the mid-fifties, he slugged two homers and drove in five runs in the Los Angeles Angels first ever win (7-2 over the Orioles) on April 11, 1961.

3. This Cincinnati reliever came in to pitch the fifth inning of the July 27, 1930 game against Chicago. He threw just one pitch, which was hit into a triple play, and then left the game. The Reds rallied to take the lead and at day's end he had recorded the win, a 6-5 victory. One pitch, three outs, and your name in the win column. Not bad work if you can get it.

4. The Yankees crushed the A's 25-2 in a game at Shibe Park on May 24, 1936. The Yankees' number eight hitter stroked three home runs (including two grand slams) and a triple, good for an A.L. record 11 runs batted in.

5. In 1952, this minor league pitcher closed out his career with 383 wins, the most ever in the minor leagues, yet he never once made it to the show.

6. His grand slam on September 7, 1952 gave the Yankees a 5-1 victory over the Senators. The milestone: this homer meant that he had hit a home run in every major league ballpark.

7. This Indian slugger drove in seven runs in two innings, tying a major league mark, yet the Tribe lost this slugfest to the BoSox on September 14, 1957.

8. Honored by the Brooklyn faithful with a day in his honor, he recorded his 1,000 R.B.I. as the Dodgers took a pair from the Cubbies on July 19, 1957.

9. The Cubs were having kind of a tough series that week because on the following day (July 20, 1957) this Dodger stroked home run number 300.

10. Within a week in June, 1977, two pitchers passed Sandy Koufax in career strikeouts. One player ended his career in a Red Sox uniform while the other was wearing a Red Sox uniform that day.

11. On February 26, 1969 he signed a one year contract for $130,000 making him (up until then) the highest paid American Leaguer of all time.

12. Pitcher Thornton Lee and his son, Don, both gave up home runs to this Hall of Famer, twenty-one years apart.

13. On September 17, 1960, he became the first catcher in major league history to record his second unassisted double play.

14. He holds the major league record for hits in a season--257, set in 1920.

15. Described by Connie Mack as "the man with the million-dollar arm", he is the only player in major league history to end his career with a 1.000 batting average, 1.000 fielding average, and a 1.000 winning percentage as a pitcher.

16. The Hall of Fame inducted its first class in what year?

17. After Walter Johnson, who was the next pitcher to record 3,000 strikeouts?

18. The last major league team to break the color barrier waited until 1959 before a black man finally wore their uniform.

19. Who is the only man to pitch to both Babe Ruth and Mickey Mantle at the major league level?

20. He collected home runs 39 and 40 against Robin Roberts and the Phillies on September 21, 1957, tying the N.L. record of five consecutive 40 home run seasons. Who was this prodigious slugger and whose record did he match?

21. The Phil's starting catcher in '28 and '29, he was killed when struck by a truck while walking along the sidewalk in his home city of Baltimore on October 22, 1929.

22. A 21 game winner for the Tigers in '35, he won the series clincher with a complete game victory over the Cubs in Game Six on October 7 before 48,420 cheering Detroit fans.

23. Babe Ruth appeared as a pinch hitter for pitcher Ernie Shore in Game One of the 1915 World Series. It was the Babe's only appearance of the series, his first. Who did the Sox defeat that year to win the Series?

24. Who won the clincher in the 1906 Series finale between the Cubs and the "Hitless Wonders", the White Sox?

25. On July 18, 1962, the Minnesota Twins became the first team in major league history to hit two grand slams in the same inning. The two sluggers were the Twins top two home run hitters that season. Who were they?
