Oakland Athletics Trivia Book IV

One For the Book

1. The Royals' top reliever in '88 and '89, he was 13-7, as a reliever, with a 1.96 E.R.A. in 1990.

2. A member of the A's last championship club, he was 12-6 with six saves for the Phillies in 1989.

3. The N.L. E.R.A. leader in '89, he started, and lost, Games One and Three in the Giants' 1989 Series loss to the A's.

4. After going 11-4 for the Pale Hose in 1990, he led all Senior Circuit hurlers with 77 trips to the mound for the Expos in '91.

5. A former American League Cy Young Award winner, he won 20 ball games for the Mets in 1990.

6. Traded by the Tigers to the Phillies the season before the Bengals won the World Series, he drove home 102 runs for the Phils in 1985.

7. In his big league career he went 7 for 39, all singles, in a cup of coffee appearance with the '31 Red Sox but in 1930 he hit three home runs in one inning in the minors.

8. In his 20 plus seasons in the bigs, starting with the '58 Dodgers, he appeared in over 1,000 games as both an outfielder and as a first baseman.

9. An A's coach under Billy Martin, he was a starter on the powerful Yankee teams of the early sixties.

10. Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle played together for part of one season. Name the year.

11. One of five Braves pitchers in double figues for wins in 1955, this 23 year old rookie went 10-9. He won 11 the following season but only tallied 30 victories in his big league career, which ended with the Giants in '58.

12. The following season, the Reds also had five hurlers in double figures for wins. One of those hurlers was later the A's pitching coach in the early '80's.

13. After a cup of coffee (or two) with the Brooklyn Dodgers, this slugging outfielder clubbed 23 home runs in his first season with the Cubs (1956).

14. A star outfielder with the Dodgers in the sixties, he led the A.L East Champion Orioles in R.B.I.'s as a DH in 1974.

15. He won 14 games for the Giants pennant-winning ball club in 1936. After winning just one game in two seasons with the Phils, he went to the Indians in 1940 and preceded to register 10 victories or more four straight seasons; his best campaign was 17 wins against but 7 losses in 1943.

16. The only member of the '43 Athletics in double figures in home runs, this Cuban-born gardener only stroked 11. Suspended in 1946 for jumping to the Mexican League, he was reinstated and appeared in eight ballgames for the Mack Men in 1949.

17. A hard hitting first sacker who clubbed 14 home runs as a rookie with the Giants in '46, he stroked 24 for the '49 Brownies, good for tops on the team. Incredibly, these were his only two seasons in the bigs.

18. Who was the league leader in wins during the American League's maiden season (1901)?

19. What speedy A's outfielder of the early seventies was nicknamed the "Panamanian Express"?

20. One of the greatest Series of all times was the '91 matchup between the Twins and the Braves. Jack Morris won the seventh game with a gutsy 10 inning shut-out. Who was the losing pitcher in this classic seventh game?

21. The Ace of the Senators' staff, he was traded to Minnesota in 1961. Over the next three seasons he would lead the league in stikeouts three times and win 20 games twice. He missed out on a fourth consecutive crown as the A.L. strikeout king in 1964 by just four strikeouts.

22. This speedster, a budding star for the Reds during the early sixties, made the 30-30 club in the Brewers' inaugural season.

23. He saved games two and three in the Reds' three game sweep of Pittsburgh in the 1970 Championship Series.

24. In 1938, this well-traveled right hander went 20-16 for the St. Louis Browns with an E.R.A. of 5.08, the highest ever for a twenty game winner.

25. In his only big league season, he set the major league mark for losses (for a one season career, that is) when he went 11-18 in 30 games with the 1902 Phillies.
